Adjustable vs Fixed Dumbbells: The Real Cost
"Are adjustable dumbbells worth it?" is really a maths question. Pick the weight range you want to own and see what it costs as a rack of fixed pairs versus one adjustable pair from our tested sets.
£2.20/kg is a typical UK price for rubber hex dumbbells. Budget cast iron runs closer to £1.80/kg; premium urethane £3-£4/kg.

Fixed-set figure is an estimate from the £/kg you set above; it climbs fast because every pair is bought twice (one per hand). Adjustable prices are typical pair prices from our reviews, which show live Amazon pricing where available.
Why fixed sets get so expensive
Fixed dumbbells are priced by weight, and you buy every weight twice. Covering 2.5kg to 25kg in 2.5kg steps means ten pairs - 275kg of iron - before you've bought the rack to store them. At typical UK rubber hex prices that's £550 to £700 for a range a £145 to £500 adjustable pair also covers.
Fixed sets still win in two situations: training where weights get dropped or bailed, and supersets where even a five-second weight change breaks the set. If that's not you, the maths above is usually decisive - which is why our rankings focus on adjustable sets, and why commercial gyms (different constraints, different budgets) still buy fixed.

Common questions
Are adjustable dumbbells cheaper than fixed dumbbells?
Almost always, once you want more than two or three pairs. Fixed rubber hex dumbbells cost roughly £2-£2.50 per kg in the UK, so covering 2.5-25kg in 2.5kg steps is around 275kg of iron - £550-£700 before you add a rack. An adjustable pair covering the same range costs £145-£500 depending on the set.
When are fixed dumbbells the better buy?
Three cases: you drop weights (selectorised adjustables cannot take impact), you superset constantly and cannot wait a few seconds between weight changes, or you only ever need one or two pairs. Commercial gyms buy fixed sets for durability; home gyms rarely need that trade-off.
How much space does a fixed dumbbell set take up?
A 10-pair rack needs roughly 1.8m of wall and sticks out about 60-80cm, so allow around 1.5m² once you include access space. An adjustable pair in its cradles needs about 0.3m² - a corner or a shelf on a stand.
Do I need a dumbbell rack?
For a fixed set, realistically yes - a floor full of loose pairs is a trip hazard and ruins your floor. Budget £150-£250 for a decent UK 2-tier rack. Adjustable sets come with their own cradles, and an optional stand (£60-£120) just saves you deadlifting them off the floor every set.
